Within Overeaters Anonymous, we follow suggested principles to ensure the survival and growth of the many groups that compose OA. One of our principles – neutrality – stems from Tradition 10 which states that OA has no opinion on outside issues; hence, the OA name ought never be drawn into public controversy. This principle ensures OA adheres to its foundational rule to protect our fellowship's focus on its primary purpose: helping compulsive overeaters. Tradition 10 establishes a healthy boundary by defining “outside issues” as topics that are not directly related to our primary purpose, the clouding and controversy of which only does harm to our members and to OA as a whole. These are matters not for OA to decide. Our competence remains solely focused upon working the Twelve Steps and respectfully supporting our fellow members to grow and find wellness in mind, body, and spirit. Our only area of concern and focus is upon helping compulsive eaters find a solution to their problem through working the Twelve Steps of OA recovery. We accomplish this by honoring and respecting our diversity and by being of mutual support to one another throughout the lives of our members. In this way we may live happily, joyfully, and free from the bondage of our ego and addiction. Our focus upon service unites us and affords us both strong support as well as enriching our lives with loving and harmonious purpose, greater overall satisfaction, and joyful meaning. Examples of issues out of OA's concern include:

WE Work Alongside YOU OA works alongside many professionals like you, complementing your expert recommendations and encouraging our members to seek outside help whenever it is needed. Many of us have struggled with health issues and/or trauma, and its after effects. We recognize such things impact us in ways that necessitate outside intervention, medical support, wise consultation on nutrition and health, as well as mental and emotional expertise, support, and guidance. In sharing our experience, strength, and hope with one another - at group level and individually - we help to encourage and support increasing health and wellness, revealing the value and benefits of working with professionals and experts. This makes OA a wonderful ally to the community of professionals who encounter or serve compulsive eaters such as us. What OA provides is an ongoing support system for members that encourages them to help themselves and to help one another – thereby weakening their isolation and loneliness which only encourages and serves to ignite our compulsive eating and compulsive eating behaviors. In OA, we have experienced that we get better together. What we could never accomplish alone, we discover we can, indeed, accomplish together! Learn More by Attending an Open OA Meeting We encourage all professionals, but particularly those in healthcare, as well as all medical students, to attend an open OA meeting to gain a better understanding of the nature of food addiction. Attendance at a few “open” OA meetings (and all OASV meetings are open to non-members) can clearly show how valuable the program can be. It is not uncommon for some compulsive eaters to find recovery with OA alone, while others may greatly benefit from the combination of healthcare treatment and ongoing OA attendance. Overeaters Anonymous supports the decisions and recommendations of the professionals we encounter. We claim no expertise and keep our focus on our primary purpose: helping the still struggling compulsive eater. Welcome to OASV Who We Serve & How We Serve Them What is OA?
